NFS client can only mount NFS share intermittently. Mounting fails with 'rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.'

Issue

  • On an NFS client NFS shares mount intermittently. When the mount fails, the following error message can be observed:
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.
mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified
  • When the nolock mount option is specified the share will successfully mount.
