CPU soft lockups and server crashes on RHEL 7 Hypervisor

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When running a virtual machine which has more memory defined than available in one NUMA-region, the virtual machine could become non-responsive when running applications with high memory utilization. The virtual machine reports a lot of "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#xx stuck for XXs!" messages in the system protocol.
  • A virtual machine becomes non responsive but is shown as healthy in RH(E)V GUI. Neither console nor ssh login is working.

Environment

  • Red Hat Virtualization 7 Hypervisor (RHV-H)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Hypervisor (RHEL7-H)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 with KVM (RHEL)
