JBoss Portal Error Handling does not work with HTTP Status 500

Issue

We have a problem with error handling in JBoss Portal.

When we invoke Portal with an incorrect URL, such as http://localhost:8080/portal/portal/default/default/IdentityUserPortletWindow?action=-1,   it returns with Tomcat's default error page for HTTP Status 500 including the stacktrace.

Why is the error not intercepted by /WEB-INF/jsp/error/portal.jsp or /WEB-INF/jsp/error/page.jsp?
