Loading NAT module with/without rules affects ping behaviour

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Loading  NAT module with/without rules affects ping behaviour.
  • The iptables  manual page just says "ACCEPT means to  let the packet through"
  • in  general section and I thought the nat  table doesn't take effect unless targets  like SNAT/DNAT or MASQUERADE  are explicitly used.

Environment

  • Red hat Enterprise Linux 5.3
  • kernel-2.6.18-128.el5
