Setting "tmp" option in /etc/crypttab leads to filesystem with improper 0755 permissions

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When we use the tmp option in the 4th field of /etc/crypttab to have the /tmp filesystem re-created at boot-time, the permissions are wrong -- the mode on /tmp ends up being 0755 instead of the traditional (and necessary) 1777.

  • /tmp mode not 1777 when created by crypttab

  • When a server is rebooted, /tmp is recreated and mounted, but its dir mode is 755 and not 1777. Having 755 and not 1777 breaks the normal functions of any Unix server.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • device in /etc/crypttab with tmp option for use with /tmp
