What is the maximum number of tape drives that Red Hat Enterprise Linux can support?
Issue
- A system has a high number of tape devices attached, (depending on the kernel version this can be more than 128 or more than 512 devices).
- The following kernel message is logged:
st: too many tape devices (max <ST_MAX_TAPES>)
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
- More than 128 or 512 tape drives, ie, a virtual tape library.
