Filesystem on KVM guests becomes read-only due to IO errors on Virt IO disks

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When the NFS share on which the disk image of a KVM guest resides became inaccessible on the KVM host,a few IO errors were seen on the KVM guest, the KVM guest was rebooted after which the root filesystem on the guest was mounted read-only

  • Is it possible to specify a timeout value for KVM Virt IO disks to prevent IO errors when an NFS share becomes inaccessible?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, 6
  • KVM Virtual machines with Virt IO Disks that reside on an NFS share
