The server while shutdown/reboots hangs with the message "nfs: server XX.XX.XX.XX not responding, still trying"

Issue

  • A Red Hat Enterprise Linux system has problems when rebooting/shutdown sequence. Frequently at shutting down, the system shows an NFS error as below, this makes the reboot process not to finish and then it needs to be forced to shutdown.
    mount: / is busy
    Halting system...
    nfs: server XX.XX.XX.XX not responding, still trying

Environment

  • RHEL clients having NFS mounts from any kind NFS server.
  • Applications running from this NFS share and not having proper shutdown scripts.
