autofs stops responding after "setmntent: Too many open files" occur in the logs

Issue

  • The automount daemon is dying on regular basis. No home directories are available after that. Personal web sites in /home/*/public_html are unreachable and personal file shares through samba are down.

  • The following messages are logged in /var/log/messages :

automount[19080]: set_tsd_user_vars: failed to get passwd info from getpwuid_r
automount[19080]: get_mnt_list:363: setmntent: Too many open files

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3
  • NFS-server resolves to IPv4 and IPv6 addresses
