iptables prints "Warning: wierd character in interface `ethX:Y' (No aliases, :, ! or *)." when using IP aliasing

Issue

Running "iptables -o ethX:Y" prints an error like this:

     Warning: wierd character in interface `ethX:Y' (No aliases, :, ! or *).

However, "iptables -L" shows the rule is loaded correctly.

Environment

RHEL 5

At least one IP alias has been set on at least one interface.

iptables is used to force outgoing packet to go through an aliased interface.
