Is it possible to change the disk type for Windows virtual guests to VirtIO after installation?

Issue

  • My Windows guest was installed in RHEV using virtual IDE as the disk type. Is it possible to change this to virtio?
  • I've got a KVM Windows XP guest, using IDE, I need to change it to VirtIO, will it be supported?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.0, 3.1, 3.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) with KVM
  • Guest: Windows installed using virtual IDE or virtual SCSI
