Installing a RHEL6 virtualisation host and then trying to enable MultiQueue as per Virtualisation Tuning and Optimisation Guide does not work - why?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

In the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 documentation, Virtualisation Tuning and Optimisation Guide, section 5.5 for Network Optimisation, it states that this feature is available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Guests as of RHEL 6.6. It then proceeds to explain what the feature is and how to enable it in the domain XML.
The way the text is worded, it gives the impression that this is a feature available in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 hypervisor. That is not the case. Neither libvirt nor qemu-kvm in RHEL6 carries the required featureset to enable this from the hypervisor side. RHEL7 will be required for that.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6, or later RHEL6, hypervisor
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6, or later RHEL6, guest
