System locks up with bnx2x_panic_dump in /var/log/messages on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4

Issue

  • Operating system begins issuing bnx2x_panic_dump messages and system loses network access.
  • Panic dump messages continues until server is rebooted.
  • Cycling the network task does not make any difference, it starts again as soon as the network is brought back up, and then the kernel panics.
  • Loss of network, kernel panics: bnx2x_panic_dump.
  • The following error messages are seen in /var/log/messages, followed by a firmware diagnostic dump from the bnx2x card:
    kernel: [bnx2x_stats_update:4289(mgt2)]storm stats were not updated for 3 times
    kernel: [bnx2x_stats_update:4290(mgt2)]driver assert
    kernel: [bnx2x_panic_dump:537(mgt2)]begin crash dump -----------------

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3

    • kernel-2.6.18-128.el5 to 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4

    • kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 to kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5
  • Broadcom network cards using bnx2x driver
