3rd party lshook and linuxshield modules caused list corruption and subsequent outage

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • I have a host where, when I issue the command "service iptables restart" or "service iptables stop" the kernel panics fatally immediately after the display of the text "Unloading Modules"
  • After the most recent kernel update we started experiencing fatal panics on boot. This allowed me to get managerial approval to remove the modules. When I removed the modules the server booted and the iptables symptom went away as well.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.7
  • McAfee lshook and linuxshield modules
