Server unable to boot, receives error "/dev/sd* is in use"

Issue

  • System unable to boot and drops in maintenance shell.
  • Receiving below error during boot after system packages were updated .
/dev/sdd is in use
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

/dev/sde is in use 
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

*** An error occured during the file system check.
*** Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
*** when you leave the shell.
Give root password for maintenance

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • ext3 or ext4 file systems
