mkdir hangs indefinitely on an automounted NFS mount, initial hang results in subsequent hangs on the mount point

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Periodically a mkdir command will hang indefinitely on NFS mounts being automounted via autofs. All subsequent calls to that particular mount point will also hang. The mount point will continue to be available from other clients and the server will remain operational. This results in further hangs of processes trying to access to NFS mount to hang as well.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • kernel < 2.6.18-308.el5
