Fail to mount filesystem after vgcfgrestore on SAN volume on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • 4 FS showing wrong fs type, bad option , bad superblock.
# mount -t ext3 /dev/mapper/vg01-lvol0 /mnt/mountpoint
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/vg01-lvol0,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), including:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5)
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6)
  • LVM2 volume management
    • Originally LVM2 Physical Volume's (PV's) were created on a partition on a device (eg. mpath0p5)
    • pvcreate was mistakenly run on the whole multipath device (eg. mpath0) rather than the partition(eg. mpath0p5), wiping the partition table.
