importing an exported VM in RHEV-M can cause MAC address assignment collisions

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When you export a VM in RHEV-M it frees up the MAC address used by the VM's virtual NIC and a newly built VM is given the newly freed MAC address when requesting a new virtual NIC. The problem arises when the exported VM is imported back into RHEV-M, in this case it is given back it's original MAC address which can cause MAC collisions on the network.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager (RHEV-M) 2.2
  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager (RHEV-M) 3.0
