ntp time reset messages observed on VMware based RHEL guests running as ntp clients. Why?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • There few ntp clients which are syncing with ntp servers. These ntp servers are based on VMware.
  • However, there are two ntp clients which have shown ntp related issue, particularly speaking the logs of the below kind are observed in /var/log/messages on these servers :-
Oct 3 00:12:50 ntp-client ntpd[14455]: time reset +188.115635 s
Oct 3 00:42:27 ntp-client ntpd[14455]: time reset -188.119234 s
  • There has been a stepping up of time observed on few clients.

  • However, there have been no issues reported or observed for other remaining ntp clients running as RHEL guests,i.e no 'ntpd [] time reset +188.115635 s' logs observed on the other nodes. Why the other nodes were not affected even all four nodes running on the same physical host?

  • We're having ntp time reset issue on 2 servers . Because of this time reset causing application outage. We're expecting to have similar to this two server without having any ntp time reset issue. This 4 servers running the same apps where two out of 4 servers having "NTP TIME RESET" issue.

Environment

  • RHEL 6
  • VMware guest
  • ntp
