Kdump fails to generate a vmcore on VMWare guests because of pvscsi kernel module

Issue

  • Upon testing Kdump, it hangs on the below message:

    Waiting for required block device discovery
    Waiting for 2 sda-like device(s)...
    

    OR

    Saving to the local filesystem UUID=97a7ab3c-b437-4b36-9458-d9a110d06f0c
    Usage: fsck.ext4 [-panyrcdfvtDFV] [-b superblock] [-B blocksize]
                [-I inode_buffer_blocks] [-P process_inode_size]
                [-l|-L bad_blocks_file] [-C fd] [-j external_journal]
                [-E extended-options] device
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • VMWare virtual guest
  • VMWare shipped pvscsi module [coming from either kmod-vmware-tools-pvscsi/vmware-tools]
