What things does a load balancer need to check to have sticky sessions with JBoss?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We got a JBoss cluster consisting of two Jboss instances.  We want to use a hardware load balancer to load balance HTTP traffic for this cluster.  The load balancer talks directly to the JBoss instances via the normal tomcat http and https ports. We need to configure sticky-session (Server affinity). How does the load balancer know how to identify an incoming request needs to go the server one because previous related request was served by server one?

Environment

  • JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP)
    • 4
    • 5
  • Hardware load balancer
  • Apache httpd
  • mod_jk
