Why do I get "Error: Missing Dependency: <someRPM> is needed by package <someRPM>-devel" when updating my Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Desktop ?

Issue

  • The yum update command fails with the dependency errors for many development(*-devel) packages while updating Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop system.

    For example:

    ---> Package giflib.i386 0:4.1.3-7.1.el5_3.1 set to be updated
    --> Finished Dependency Resolution
    Error: Missing Dependency: kdebase = 6:3.5.4-18.el5 is needed by package kdebase-devel
    Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.2.3-11.el5_1.3 is needed by package httpd-manual
    Error: Missing Dependency: sabayon-apply = 2.12.4-5.el5 is needed by package sabayon
    Error: Missing Dependency: alsa-lib = 1.0.14 is needed by package alsa-lib-devel
    Error: Missing Dependency: evolution-data-server = 1.12.3-6.el5 is needed by package evolution-data-server-devel
    Error: Missing Dependency: openmotif = 2.3.0-0.5.el5 is needed by package openmotif-devel
    Error: Missing Dependency: hal = 0.5.8.1-35.el5 is needed by package hal-devel
    Error: Missing Dependency: libgfortran = 4.1.2-42.el5 is needed by package gcc-gfortran
