LVM commands print "Volume Groups with the clustered attribute will be inaccessible." and/or "Skipping clustered volume group" on RHEL cluster nodes

Issue

  • I am unable to activate clustered volume groups even though clvmd is started
  • Boot process shows a failure to activate clustered volume groups, but they still get activated later by clvmd. This causes a warning in the system tray after I login.
Setting up Logical Volume Management:   
  Skipping clustered volume group clust
  3 logical volume(s) in volume group "vg_example" now active
FAILED
  • LVM commands do not display or work on clustered volume groups
connect() failed on local socket: No such file or directory
Internal cluster locking initialisation failed.
WARNING: Falling back to local file-based locking.
Volume Groups with the clustered attribute will be inaccessible.
Skipping clustered volume group VGgfs00
  • Errors such as those shown below can be seen in the logs in RHEL 4:
clvmd: Cluster LVM daemon started - connected to CMAN
kernel: CMAN: WARNING no listener for port 11 on node node1.cluster.example.com
clvmd: clvmd startup succeeded
vgchange:   connect() failed on local socket: No such file or directory
vgchange:   WARNING: Falling back to local file-based locking.

vgchange:   Skipping clustered volume group VolGroup02
