Hot-adding memory to RHEL6 guest running on VMWare fails or results in kernel oops

Issue

  • Hot-adding memory to RHEL6 guest running on VMWare virtualization may result in the system not detecting added memory or some kernel oops may occur.

  • While trying to hot-add memory in VMware RHEL6 guest, the following errors may occur (this log is stripped):

kacpi_notify: page allocation failure. order:9, mode:0x80d0
ACPI:memory_hp:add_memory failed
ACPI:memory_hp:Error in acpi_memory_enable_device
acpi_memhotplug: probe of PNP0C80:00 failed with error -22
ACPI:memory_hp:Cannot find driver data

Environment

  • VMware ESXi 4/5 with "Memory Hot Add" enabled
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2 and newer
