kpartx shows 'device-mapper: reload ioctl on sda3p1 failed: Invalid argument' error

Issue

  • We are trying to create partitions on multipath devices. For this we created a partition on sub path of multipath device and ran kpartx, but kpartx shows following error messages:

    [root@localhost]# kpartx -a /dev/sda3
device-mapper: reload ioctl on sda3p1 failed: Invalid argument
create/reload failed on sda3p1
device-mapper: reload ioctl on sda3p2 failed: Invalid argument
create/reload failed on sda3p2

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
  • DM-Multipath
