After patching latest kernel getting "Cannot open root device or unkown-block(0,0)" error

Issue

System updated with the latest available kernel and rebooted. Unable to boot due to Kernel panic error:

Cannot open root device "/mapper/[vg-name]-[lv-name]" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
