Why do I get a mount error reporting 'Invalid argument' on my GFS or GFS2 filesystem on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3?

Issue

  • Mounting of GFS or GFS2 file system fails with errors such as:

    # mount -o noquota,noatime /dev/clustervg/gfs1 /mnt/gfs1
    /sbin/mount.gfs: error mounting /dev/mapper/clustervg-gfs1 on /mnt/gfs1: Invalid argument
    

   OR

# mount -o noquota /dev/clustervg/gfs2 /mnt/gfs2
/sbin/mount.gfs2: error mounting /dev/mapper/clustervg-gfs2 on /mnt/gfs2: Invalid argument

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Update 3
  • kmod-gfs-0.1.31-3.el5 or gfs2-utils-0.1.53-1.el5
  • Using the noquota mount option
