Service httpd can not be restarted

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

RHEL 7
httpd

Issue

The httpd service was running. After running service restart, the service does not start.

Resolution

Check for disk space where error_log is stored:

  $ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
...
/dev/mapper/VolGroup_Varlog-var_log                 25587500   25587480         20 100% /var/log
...

Root Cause

Exhausting disk space designated for storing logs prevents apache httpd from starting.

Diagnostic Steps

Check the httpd configuration file for where error_log is expected to be stored and run df command to check free disk space.
