Messages to root are never dequeued in RHEL4

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The messages sent to root are never dequeued;
  • Running sendmail -v -q results in a hung process;
  • Checking the system with ps shows lots of sendmail processes
  • But the messages are delivered normally to non-root users.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS 4
  • sendmail Mail Transfer Agent
  • LDAP environment
  • nss_initgroups_ignoreusers clause in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf
