RHEL6: Contents on a NFS mount are not updated properly, new files created on the NFS server are not displayed

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • While using Red Hat Enterprise Linux as NFS client it is observed that the directory contents are out-of-date, meaning after new files are added on the NFS server in the exported directory the client still shows old directory contents. If the directory is explicitly touched from the server or updated from the client side the changes are shown correctly. The same NFS client can mount shares on top of an ext3 or ext4 filesystem without problems (from the same or a different NFS server) The problem has been observed, up to now, with 3rd party NFS servers exporting a directory from a Novell NSS filesytem or from a Microsoft NTFS filesystem.

  • NFS clients appear to have cache inconsistencies.

  • No READDIR(PLUS) is happening and old information from the local NFS client's cache is displayed instead of the current information.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • NFS
  • Up to now, this issue has been observed on 3rd party NFS servers using an NSS or NTFS filesystem.
