Igb Receive Side Scaling for NIC not working in RHEL 5.8

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Igb Receive Side Scaling for NIC not working in RHEL 5.8
  • RHEL 5.8 does not configure the RSS (Receive Side Scaling) function of the NIC 82599. As a result all incoming IP packets are on the same queue and at the end only one Core processes the user plane. All incoming IP traffic for 10Geth0 received on 10Geth0-rx-11. As a result, there is no spreading the processing on to multipe CPU cores after disabling the irqbalance service.

  • On earlier kernels, for example kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 the traffic was split between 10Geth0-rx-0 to 10Geth0-rx-11. The issue occurs in 2.6.18-308.el5 kernel.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 version 8
