Client side mapping of users and groups to alternative UIDs and GIDs within RHEL

Issue

  • In large scale environments, there is sometimes a requirement for the ability to map users and groups to specific alternative UIDs and GIDs on individual client machines. This can alleviate duplication issues. Is this possible on Red Hat Enterprise Linux?
  • We would like to change the primary group of a user based on membership with sssd

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise LInux 7.2 or newer
  • sssd-tools-1.13.0-22.el7.x86_64 or newer
