What are the steps to add an OSD back to a Ceph cluster?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • One of the OSDs were removed from the Ceph cluster using the steps below:
  1. Remove the OSD from the Crush map
# ceph osd crush remove osd.{XY}
  1. Remove the OSD from the OSD listing
# ceph osd rm osd.{XY}
  1. Remove the OSD's authentication keys
# ceph auth del osd.{XY}
  • This OSD needs to be re-added to the cluster.

  • A 'ceph-deploy disk lists' shows the disk as prepared.

  • Running a 'ceph-deploy osd activate :' changed the OSD status to 'ACTIVE'.

  • A 'ceph -s' does not show the new OSD as part of the ceph cluster.

Environment

  • Red Hat Ceph Storage 1.2.3

  • Red Hat Ceph Storage 1.3
