CUPS service doesn't seem to start, or starts very slowly in RHEL

Issue

  • We noticed quite a big delay in cupsd startup, as one can see in its log /var/log/cups/error.log, like the following:

    I [28/Jan/2015:11:43:20 +0100] Listening to 127.0.0.1:631 (IPv4)
    I [28/Jan/2015:11:43:20 +0100] Listening to /var/run/cups/cups.sock (Domain)
    I [28/Jan/2015:11:43:20 +0100] Loaded configuration file "/etc/cups/cupsd.conf"
    I [28/Jan/2015:11:43:20 +0100] Full reload is required.
    I [28/Jan/2015:12:30:15 +0100] Full reload complete.
    I [28/Jan/2015:12:30:15 +0100] Resuming new connection processing...

Between the line "Full reload is required" and the line "Full reload complete", more than 45 minutes have passed and during this time the cups service was not available. Is there any way to shorten the startup time?

  • Server crashed, on rebooting, hung on starting cups. No errors in logs.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS)
