Red Hat Directory Server and high excessive memory usage, what can I do?

What can be done when Red Hat Directory Server (RHDS) version 8 and 9 seem to run the ns-slapd processes using excessive memory ?
This may affect application performance.
This note will mainly focus on the entry cache setting, and is one possible suggestion to resolve such issue, and may not be the full solution.
