Audio does not work for desktop when the home directory of the logged in user is owned by another user

Issue

  • Audio does not work when user home is owned by root and permissions are 777.
  • The home directory is being shared by Windows and Linux users.
  • Changing ownership to user is not an option due to unique requirement.
  • Below error is observed while running "speaker-test" command.
"Playback open error: -111, Connection refused
Home directory /home/username not ours.
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused".
  • The home directory permission is 777, owned by root:root

  • pulseaudio
