Receive "nfs:server hostname not responding" periodically when using NFS on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7 with VMWare ESX

Issue

  • The client will lose connection to the NFS server periodically for 3-4 seconds and then recover, during this phase the following messages are seen via /var/log/messages: 
May 16 11:04:38 hostname kernel: nfs: server hostname not responding, still trying
May 16 11:04:39 hostname kernel: nfs: server hostname not responding, still trying
May 16 11:04:39 hostname kernel: nfs: server hostname OK
May 16 11:04:39 hostname kernel: nfs: server hostname OK

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7
  • VMWare ESX
