Unable to save vmcore to SAN devices connected through Qlogic or Emulex HBAs.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We have installed RHEL 4 and have configured diskdump to save a vmcore on SAN devices connected through Qlogic FC HBAs, but the diskdump is unable to save vmcore.

  • If the diskdump service is started manually then it fails with following error:

    $ service diskdump restart
    diskdump: diskdumpctl: failed to add /dev/sdb1!
    diskdump: activating failed
    kernel: disk_dump: shut down

  • The same error messages are observed while trying to save vmcore on SAN devices connected through Emulex FC HBAs.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • kernel 2.6.9-34
  • diskdump
