Why doesn’t the Fujitsu PRIMEQUEST 2000 series support guests when “Extended Partitioning” feature is enabled?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • Fujitsu PRIMEQUEST 2000 series

Issue

  • I can’t set up and run a supported hypervisor within an Extended Partition on a PRIMEQUEST 2000 series System.

Resolution

  • Users can either utilize the “Extended Partitioning” feature to partition the physical partition and run a single instance of the Operating System in each divided partition, OR disable the “Extended Partitioning” feature to utilize Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Red Hat Virtualization as a hypervisor to configure guests on top of it.

Root Cause

  • When the “Extended Partitioning” is enabled on a physical partition, the PRIMEQUEST 2000 series does not support the Intel VT-x function which is required by KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine).
