fence_xvm times out or hangs for long periods of time in a RHEL 5, 6, or 7 High Availability cluster of VMs running on a RHEL 6 or 7 host using fence-virtd-multicast

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I am trying to get fence_xvm to work on my libvirt VMs, and the request just times out.
# fence_xvm -a 226.18.19.20 -k /etc/cluster/fence_virtd.key -o list
Timed out waiting for response
Operation failed
  • My VM cluster nodes that use fence_xvm can't fence each other.
  • How can I troubleshoot fence_xvm not returning any results or fencing a node?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 with the High Availability Add On
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 with the High Availability Add On
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 with the High Availability Add On
  • libvirt VMs running as a cluster
  • Cluster uses fence_xvm for node fencing
  • fence_virtd running on the RHEL 6 or 7 libvirt host using fence-virtd-multicast as the listener
    • These same concepts may apply equally to a RHEL 5 host running fence_xvmd, but they have not been checked for accuracy there
