When JON reports free and used memory on a Linux platform resource it does not take into account cached and buffered memory

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • Monitor Linux memory correctly and usefully
  • JBoss Operations Network (JBoss ON or JON) shows free memory amount just by looking at the free amount of memory
  • Free memory reported for Linux is useless because it sums also disk cache and buffers which are filled as much there is free memory available.
  • Free and used system memory is reported by itself without including memory buffers and cache
  • The free and used memory reported for the platform does not reflect the actual free and used memory

Environment

  • JBoss Operations Network (JON) 3.0, 3.0.1
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6
  • Platform's Free Memory metric
  • Platform's Used Memory metric
