Why do virtual machine live migrations fail?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • A virtual machine was set to live migrate to another host. After some time, the VM failed to live migrate. According to the vdsm.log on the host, the VM was "too busy" and the memory was being changed to rapidly, so it was unable to migrate. However, the only reason for this given in the RHEV Admin Portal was:

Migration failed due to Error: Internal Engine Error.

  • When there are active processes running on the VMs and the OS is reading/writing large amounts of memory, VM migration stalls and ultimately times out.
  • I have a vm that appears to be stuck on one of my rhev nodes. The vm is functioning just fine, but I'm trying to live migrate it so that we can perform firmware updates on the node its running on.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) 3.1 - 3.4
