Unable to receive package updates after registering new system to RHN Classic or RHN Satellite

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Installed a new RHEL 6.4 x86_64 server, and registered it with rhn_register. It installed and registered, but no /etc/yum.repos.d/redhat.repo file has been created.
  • Each attempt at installing a package now produces :
# yum install vsftpd
Loaded plugins: product-id, security, subscription-manager
This system is not registered to Red Hat Subscription Management. You can use subscription-manager to register.
Setting up Install Process
No package vsftpd available.
Error: Nothing to do
  • Need to use the rhn_classic system (rhn_register), instead of subscription-manager, since I want to work with mrepo.

  • Running yum command shows No Repositories Available to Set Up message,

yum check-update
Loading "security" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
