Why does installation halt at the "Probing EDD" message on the Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX120 S2?

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX120 S2
  • 2 or more SATA disks connected to the onboard Intel ICH9R SATA controller
    N.B. this configuration is not officially supported by Fujitsu.

Issue

  • During installation, progress halts at the EDD probe and the system requires resetting:
Loading vmlinuz-rhel6i386...............................
......
Loading initrd.img-rhel6i386............................
......
Ready.
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... _

Resolution

  • To work around this problem, boot the installation with the following option added to the kernel boot parameter:
linux edd=off
