How do I change the timeout of the software watchdog in RHEL?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

The system administrator is trying to use the watchdog program in conjunction with the kernel softdog watchdog to reboot a stateless client when its NFS server becomes inaccessible.

While this works the defaults reboot the system after only a few seconds. It is desired to wait a longer period to allow the NFS connection time to recover.

The watchdog daemon is set to ping the NFS server as its check. The SA has loaded the softdog module with the "soft_margin=300" option in an attempt to allow for more recovery time, but the system is still being restarted within only a few seconds of failure.
