yum install/update or rhn_check fails with "[Errno -1] Package does not match intended download" error

yum install <package>andrhn_checkgive the following error:

<package_name>: failed to retrieve getPackage/<package_name> from <channel_name>
error was [Errno -1] Package does not match intended download
