Cannot set bonding when IPv6 is disabled after updating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4

Issue

  • Bonding does not work when ipv6 is disabled after updating to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4
  • Trying to load the bonding module using modprobe will result in the below error message.
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe bonding
FATAL: Error inserting bonding (/lib/modules/2.6.18-164.6.1.el5/kernel/drivers/net/bonding/bonding.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

[root@localhost ~]# dmesg | grep bond
bonding: Unknown symbol ndisc\_build\_skb
bonding: Unknown symbol in6\_dev\_finish\_destroy
bonding: Unknown symbol ndisc\_send\_skb
bonding: Unknown symbol unregister\_inet6addr\_notifier
bonding: Unknown symbol register\_inet6addr\_notifier

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 (and newer)
  • kernel-2.6.18-164.el5 (and newer)
