On a RHEL NFS client, running setfacl returns "Operation not supported"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Unable to set ACL (Access Control List) on the NFS share from the NFS client with setfacl command, getting below error:

    $ setfacl -m d:o:r /opt/addserv/shared/mq/qmgrs/ACRSP1/errors
    setfacl: /opt/addserv/shared/mq/qmgrs/ACRSP1/errors: Operation not supported

  • setfacl returns "Operation not supported" from filesystem shared from rhel 6 and mounted on rhel 6 as well but using NFS version 3.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • NFS client
  • NFSv3 or NFSv4
