XFS: possible memory allocation deadlock in kmem_alloc when using 64k block size for naming on RHEL

Issue

  • The processes using the filesystem becomes unresponsive and the following messages are logged by the kernel.
    XFS: rsync(12542) possible memory allocation deadlock size 65728 in kmem_alloc (mode:0x250)

  • Ceph OSD are terminating and following messages are logged by the kernel.
    XFS: possible memory allocation deadlock in kmem_alloc (mode:0x8250)

Note: details of the process and size of allocation were added in 3.10.0-514.el7 (RHEL7.3).

  • Red Hat Ceph Storage 1.3

    • kernel 3.10.0-123.20.1.el7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

    • Kernel-3.10.0-1062.el7
