What is the recommended video driver for BladeSymphony and Hitachi Compute Blade server?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1
  • BladeSymphony BS2000 (Hitachi Compute Blade 2000) server series
  • BladeSymphony BS500 (Hitachi Compute Blade 500) server series

Issue

  • When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.1 on BladeSymphony BS2000 (Hitachi Compute Blade 2000) server series, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on BladeSymphony BS500 (Hitachi Compute Blade 500) server series, the installer defaults to using the mga video driver during installation. However, the video driver does not function properly when remote KVM(keyboard/video/mouse) is used.

Resolution

Hitachi recommends that the customer use the vesa driver in such configurations since it has better KVM support than the mga driver. To change the video driver to vesa, type "linux xdriver=vesa" in the installer boot option when installing RHEL5. For RHEL6, users must choose "Install System with Basic Video Driver" option. For RHEL7.1, users must choose "Install RedHat EnterpriseLinux 7.1 in Basic Graphics Mode" option.
